Hi, I’m Gladys Martinez. I am from Caracas, Venezuela, now living in Rockmart, Georgia USA.
I’ve been doing pottery for more than 27 years. I took pottery classes taught by wonderful teachers in my hometown after the birth of my second child.
I always loved the irregular forms that are found everywhere in nature, and the perfection and beauty of their organic shapes. Once Peggy Dickinson, a teacher of mine, told me I was lucky to have found my style in the first stages of my career. She described my pieces as “beautifully imperfect”.
I love playing with clay and the process of making forms by hand. All my pieces are one-of-a-kind. Most of my glazes are made from scratch.
Usually, a pit fire allows me to give my pottery more of a unique finish, with each one having an interesting design made by the smoke over its surface that cannot be duplicated. Influenced by the raku’s technique, I learned to appreciate the smooth and caramel-like effect of the glazes coupled with the smoke patterns on unglazed ware that a pit fire gives.
I’ve also been fascinated with the human figure for years. It has been a long and fascinating journey learning by myself with all kinds of books and photographs I have around my studio.
After all these years’ play and experiments with various forms of clay and other medium, I have decided to offer my creations to the public. I’m planning to venture into art galleries and art festivals in the near future. Perhaps we may have the chance to meet at such a venue. The pleasure will be mine.
I am grateful for your interest!
